Hamar Vandrerhjem Vikingskipet is a friendly, informal accommodation that is a member of Norske Vandrerhjem / Hostelling International. Within the large, modern lodge are meeting rooms and conference facilities suitable for groups of various sizes. A bistro called Ny & Ne Spiseri serves breakfast, lunch, and pizza for dinner. Near the shores of Lake Mjøsa, the guest house is close to Akersvika, a nature reserve known for its wonderful birdlife. Hamar Vandrerhjem Vikingskipet is approx. 2.1 km/1.3 miles from the centre of town, a pedestrian walkway that connects 2 main squares called Stortorget (the Big Square) and Østre Torg (the Eastern Square). Along the lakeshore to the west is the Hedmark Museum, a major Hamar attraction also called the Domkirkeodden, or cathedral promontory. The remains of a medieval cathedral are enclosed in a monumental glass structure; the complex also includes an ethnological museum, photography collections, and an active archeological site. For recreation, head to the Ankerskogen swimming hall (Ankerskogen svømmehall), which has saunas, a hot tub, a children’s pool, and one of the largest swimming pools in Norway.
