This historic Province of Leon accommodation is in the small village of Quintanilla de Somoza, a 30 minute drive from the town of Astorga. La Casa del Filandon is in a large traditional house built more than 200 years ago as part of a community of Maragatos, a small ethnic group known for their distinctive dress, customs, and architecture. The inn has been recently renovated to incorporate modern conveniences while retaining its historic stone walls, patio, stairs, and oven. Guests at the Casa can relax in the enclosed courtyard and sample dishes from the hotel restaurant, which specializes in local cod and trout, regional sausages, and dishes made with wild mushrooms. In the heart of the Maragateria (the land of the Maragatos, or Pais de los Maragatos in Spanish), Quintanilla de Somoza is approx. 1 km/0.6 mile from the Duerna River and the larger village of Luyego (sometimes called Luyego de Somoza). Among the other local attractions are the historic church and tower at Lagunas de Somoza, Roman mines at Filiel, and the well-preserved medieval village of Castrillo de los Polvazares. The large town of Astorga, near the intersection of the A-6 motorway (Autovia del Noroeste) and the AP-71, is the home of the Cathedral of Astorga, the neo-medieval Episcopal Palace designed by Antoni Gaudi, a Baroque town hall, and numerous Roman archaeological sites. La Casa del Filandon is approx. 70 km/45.5 miles from the city of Leon.
