In 1994, many of the ice hockey games of the XVII Olympic Winter Games were played in Gjøvik Olympic Cavern Hall (called Gjøvik Olympiske Fjellhall or Fjellhallen), considered the world’s largest public arena excavated in rock. Visitors can rent skates for ice skating or swim in the indoor pool. Also popular are cruises on Lake Mjøsa aboard the Skibladner. Constructed in 1856, it’s the oldest paddle steamer in the world still making regularly scheduled trips. Gjøvik is approx. a 1 hour drive from the Hafjell Alpine Centre in Lillehammer.
