On a historic Cape Dutch estate that dates from 1802, the Augusta de Mist Country Retreat is named for Augusta Uitenhage de Mist. She was the daughter of Jacob Abraham Uitenhage de Mist, the Dutch statesman who officially received the colony back from the British; Augusta and her father passed within a few metres of the current house in 1803 while traveling the colony together. The guest house, surrounded by extensive gardens, is located 2 blocks from the Drostdy Museum, which was the magistrate’s seat at the time of Augusta’s visit. The Augusta de Mist Country Retreat offers guests numerous charming public areas, including a lounge, a patio, and a veranda overlooking the gardens. You can use the property’s large saltwater pool or find a book in the well-stocked library. Breakfast is served under the vines in the summertime and by a log fire in winter. Celebrate a special occasion by arranging for a 4-course dinner inspired by African flavors, perhaps accompanied by a bottle of the estate’s own Eau Sauvage Blanc or Rouge wine.
